Jobless ranks climb across region

Photo by Jerry Sowden - A fireworks display Thursday night in Cranberry Township kicked off a three-evening opportunity to view fireworks in Venango County over the July 4 holiday weekend. Tonight’s Jolly July 3rd festivities in Oil City will end with a big fireworks show, and Franklin will hold its traditional Thunder over Franklin display Saturday. The Oil City and Franklin shows are both being put together by Dr. Scott Cartwright.

Venango County honors top fire policeman

Photo by Stephen West - Marcel Voss was honored with the Venango County Fire Police of the Year award Wednesday evening at the Polk fire hall. The German exchange student is a member of both the Oakland and Cornplanter volunteer fire departments. The Venango County Fire Police organization is made up of firefighters and former firefighters from Oil City, Franklin, Seneca, Rocky Grove, Reno, Polk, Cornplanter, Oakland and Pleasantville.
